Ant Facts:
You will often find them in loose soil or at the base of structures like houses, green houses, and sheds.
Nests generally consist of worker ants and wingless females and you will often see the begins of nests at the start of May.
In July/August you regularly see flying ants. These are the winged males and females that fly out for mating which, after this ritual the males die.
The common Black Ant are omnivorous and will eat anything from other small insects to sugary substances such as fruit.
They are a metropolitan species and can thrive in urban and countryside areas.
The typical Black Ant Queen (Lasius Niger) can live up to 12 years and typically mate with a male in the summer months.
An Ant can typically carry something 50 times its own weight.
