Fleas can remain dormant for long periods of time at their pupae stage and are awakened by warmth combined with movement, or even increased levels of carbon dioxide as we breathe out.

Animal fleas do not like to live on humans, but they cannot determine you're not the best host until they bite you! Human fleas are no longer common in the UK, but they can successfully feed on pigs so rural farming areas can still be effected.
