Paramount Proofing

The British Pest Control Association has installed professionalism into the industry and along with their inspections and desire to improve our services have provided guidelines and best practices to help on going control within all environments both commercially and domestically.

The majority of pest control companies now look at the services they provide with a view point to offer a complete integrated pest management style, long are the days gone of throwing bait under a tin and hoping the issue goes away and never returns.

So what are the issues that now should be addressed as we place rodenticide to try and ensure a pest free environment, well the truth is to be sure is going to be impossible but we can try and prevent.

The Environment

Generally we find access to properties is in the form of holes in brick work, missing air brick covers or even missing tiles on roofs, however before the point of access the environment can encourage infestations to appear.

Vegetation growing up into the eves can cause structural damage to buildings and provide cover for rodents and insects, growth in the gutters can cause leaks which may cause dampness and provides a water source for rats.

Products stacked against walls, compost bins, pallets, rubble even sheds and summer houses can provide excellent harbourage and living areas for rodents to multiply if the food source is regularly available in the area.

Here is a prime example of a regular food source, feeding birds is often a reason why we have rodents in our gardens, we don't want to encourage complete removal of the feeders but during treatment while infestations are controlled it is advisable they are left redundant for a period of time, often the rodents will then move on in search of a better environment that will support the colony and provide a sustainable food source.

Proofing

Rodents can access through gaps, some that are unimaginable down to mice that can access a hole the size of a pen lid.

It is there fore, where practical to do so, eliminate the initial obvious risks. The majority of the time this is enough to deter the pests, air brick covers are a fantastic option as seen below, cementing holes around pipes and adding brush strips to garage doors and access points around the home and commercial doors to close off the visible gaps.Integrated Pest Management scheme.
